Comment Threads Will Close for Holidays

Thanks for a great year! Time for a short break.

By David Beers and Geoff D'Auria, 19 Dec 2007, TheTyee.ca

Tyee Office Worker

The Tyee's comment threads will be turned off for two weeks starting tomorrow, December 20, as we ratchet back the work load around here over the holidays. The moderators need a vacation from cyberspace to spend some quiet time with friends and family!

The Tyee will continue to publish stories every weekday as usual, Christmas and New Year's included.

However, we are sorry to briefly interrupt the always lively and interesting conversation you contribute to these pages. Be assured the comment threads will roar to life again on January 3, as you and we return rejuvenated.

In the meantime, thanks for another year's great conversation, and may you enjoy a happy, healthy and peaceful holiday season. [Tyee]

    Happy holidays

The best to all for 2008.

Thanks to all the writers who make this place what it is.

    Thanks David and Geoff.

Have a good break - all cat herders need a respite from time to time - enjoy.

    It's never too late....

Just got in from seeing "Atonement" and dinner with friends.
We discussed Charlotte Whitten being called "ugly as a stump" and your and Rafe's defense of this statement. They were appalled.
Perhaps a little atonement is in order.

All I can say is when choosing the new intern-equity be a requirement.

    Bye for now.

    so for us losers

with no family and friends another link to humans is cut-off.

ah well - someone might "say" something that would be offensive to someone else.

    drag.

and again I say I wish I was in America where I grew up just shy of 7 (born in Canada though) where their values I guess formed the young boy that is me. Though I couldn't play poker online...hmmm.

I fear not insult and offense and find it difficult that so many Canadians are so, I'm sorry to say, cowardly.

Just because I am miserable is no reason why everyone else has to be.

All the best for the season for those enjoying the company of friends and family!

    Have a good break everyone....

...one question: will threads open on Jan. 3rd for articles posted before that?

There's bound to be something in the interim that posters can't resist ;-)

    Happy Festivus ;)

I've had so many demands on my time this Christmas... not that I'm complaining: partying, drinking, but especially spending time with friends and family... there's nothing better.

All the best to everyone, but especially to those I tend to direct my harshest criticism, like Glavin, TTTT, NB, r/man, the Tyee staff & writers, and all the rest. I hope you all find something to enjoy this time of the year.

    Ah, gee whiz

I'd grown accustomed to your face!

However, I do understand time off for good behaviour ( just like the criminals).

Do have a Merry Christmas. (We're not doing political correctness out here).

No coals in your stockings. Just watch that yuppie tendency to spend too much.

    Make your own gifts. Cheers.

A Merry Winter Solstice To All..

T'is an ancient occasion that predates even Christendom, indeed usurped by them in the Middle Ages; the festival of the winter solstice, celebrating the return of the sun. But whatever stream you subscribe to, it is an occasion, in the least, for feasting, gift giving a time with family. Of all the "holiday" times though, this one is my favourite.

A Merry Winter Solstice to you all, with but very few exceptions!!! :-) (No point to hypocrisy however.)

I've got a stash of good liquor and food lain in, family coming in, and the old lady and I have the turn to cook the Solstice dinner. I can scarcely wait to get at it all.

Good feasting all, as well. :-) In the finest pagan tradtion. :-)

    Happy holidays.

You guys work hard. Intense moderation at the Tyee is, well, hard and unfortunately necessary.

There are lots of ways to lighten the load without dampening discussion. Many examples exist out there.

Perhaps you should ask this question to the readers. I'm sure lots of us have ideas on how to make commenting more valuable, and easier to moderate.

    May snowflakes dance....

    To all of you....

"May snowflakes dance on your nose and eyelashes".

    L.

"Till ringing, singing on its way
The world revolved from night to day,
    A voice, a chime, a chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good will to men."

    Nobody parties like a Pagan

I love this holiday. This is the biggie, and it has been for bloody ever.

Before the baby Jesus poked his cute little nose in, it was all dancing round the sacred fire, bragging into the rising smoke of the sacrificial tree, and drinking and feasting and feeding up the neighbours till they started bragging too.

Even now, when it's come to knitted scarves and mittens, oriental knicknacks for the kiddies, and seventeen million turkeys, it still bends us into amazing shapes, and wrings goodwill out of us regardless.

As far as I'm concerned, any holiday that can turn the sultans of stuff we've become for one week away from rearranging our own stuff and set us to finding stuff for others is OK with me.

And the sweet aroma of those basted birds can take our best wishes up to the ear of the creator just as good as a spruceheart smokestream any day.

Merry Christmas to all. Welcome back the sun. Happy Chanukah, Have a sweet Saturnalia.

    God bless us, every one.

    Time Off??

Geoff, I hope you get a good break, the new year should be full of all kinds of good stuff since it seems that those with any sort of power in public office have the knack of doing stupid things frequently.

    A clarification...

    Deeby asked:

No, when we start again on Jan. 3, we won't be opening the threads on previously published stories (technical reasons). Sorry about that.

    Happy Holidays, everyone!
