Tyee Poll: 'Do What You Love': Good or Bad Advice?

We've all heard mantras from the "do what you love" school of life advice. Graduates are told to pursue their passions every spring. But writing in The Tyee, Shannon Rupp saw a dark side to that message, saying it devalues difficult labour and sets young people up for disappointment.

Rupp praises the book Do What You Love: And Other Lies About Success and Happiness, whose author says when employers say they want "passionate" workers they mean ones willing to self-sacrifice and be underpaid. "For all this romancing the job, work is called work for a reason," wrote Rupp.

Wait. Does that mean we should stop telling young people readying themselves for employment to "do what you love?" Not even give grads the gift of Dr. Seuss's Oh The Places You'll Go!?
