Tyee Poll: Do You Lug Your Own Coffee Mug?

Seattle researcher and policy analyst Margaret Morales made the case for accepting reusable mugs as the social norm. After all, it's expensive to recycle the polyethylene-coated paper cups consumers toss every day after downing their coffee.

Morales knows that paying that extra dime for your paper cup is often worth it for the convenience. "The fact is, bringing your own mug to a café is inconvenient," she writes. "Just to save one measly cup from the landfill, you have to remember your tumbler and lug it around all day."

Some coffee shops offer a discount for those who bring their own containers. Vancouver is flirting with the idea of a cup refund system, similar to one for bottles and cans.

While these are laudable solutions, Morales thinks the best solution is an attitude change. It'll cut recycling costs, the trouble of shipping cups overseas for processing, and even save water.
