Tyee Poll: Do You Support the Idea of Sanctuary Cities?

You're taking a ride on the Seabus and mistakenly buy a one-zone ticket rather than a two-zone, which the machine allows you to do even though the Seabus is two zones. Turns out the transit police are checking tickets that day. Yours is an honest mistake but because you're not from around here and don't have the right ID, they call Canada Border Services Agency. That's fine. You followed all the rules, right? Well, turns out, you made a mistake on your visa application.

This is how a a short trip to North Vancouver becomes a long deportation back to your country of origin, sometimes by way of a multi-week stay in a detention cell. Tyee reporter David Ball reported a true scenario like this in one of his reports on how Vancouver is looking into declaring itself a sanctuary city.

Sanctuary city is a municipal initiative that allows those without legal status to access city services -- like transit, schools, libraries and so on -- without fear of being deported.
