Why The Tyee Blinked Off
A server malfunction threw us off-line for several days. We're back.
TheTyee.ca
Welcome back readers of The Tyee. Thanks for your patience since Monday, when we suddenly and unexpectedly went off-line. We've endured, and are still recovering from, a malfunction of our server. No, we weren't hit by a virus or hackers. And yes, we've learned a few lessons about how to safeguard our site in the future so that we don't crash so badly again.
'Perfect storm'
What happened was this: While a technician was loading some new memory into our server some key data files became corrupted, and we've spent the past days trying to recover Tyee contents from them. As it turns out, our back-up system was also not working properly, and so it has taken longer than would normally be the case to get The Tyee's full contents back on-line. All of this made for a "perfect storm" of glitches that has meant an agonizing several days for all the people involved with the The Tyee, and we thank the technicians who are working hard to put everything back in place as soon as possible.
As of Thursday morning, we were still working to make it possible to post comments to stories, and comments to past stories may be missing for a time.
The site being down meant we missed our Monday email mail-out to subscribers. We will be combining this week's abbreviated content with last week's in the upcoming August 2 mail-out.
New search function
A bright note: You can now "google" The Tyee to find past articles. Look for the search function in the left hand sidebar of the index home page, just below the listing of our departments. By the way, you can click on those departments - NEWS, VIEWS, LIFE, etc. -- to find the past 20 stories in any category.
Again, thanks for bearing with us and coming back. It's going to take a lot more than a little crash to keep us from bringing you the feisty, independent news and views you've come to expect.

Thank Gawd everythings OK!After losing Spector and Sihota's show from the Island,I was was beginning to think about "vast right-wing conspiracy theories".We Lefties can't afford another blow like that.Welcome back!

Good to see you back up and running. On a technical note, as a progressive organization, it's sad to see thetyee.ca running on the bloated Microsoft IIS server rather than the much better, more robust, open-source and industry-standard Apache server. If The Tyee is to be a source of information for the people, why is it relying on a monopolistic software company to run it's server software, rather than using software that is made by the people. In the non-Microsoft world, adding new memory to a computer doesn't cause key data files to become corrupt.

Ahhh….Thank goodness you’re up and running again. I thought for sure that you were hit by a virus or worse a DDOS attack. As I would do my daily checks to see if you were back up and running I started to worry after a few days, wondering if the Tyee was going to be back at all. Keep up the great work David and don’t let your guard down on the net. Anyhow back to the Democratic National Convention, hoping John Kerry can beat out that Bozo Bush for the top job in November.

Glad to have you back! Lansing is absolutely right. Apache is more stable, quicker and absolutely, 100%, Bill Gates free.

Yes I'm extremely happy you guys are back! lansing and Jay are totally correct, switch to Apache now. The whole idea of Linux and open source jives with the idea's put forward on this site, please do not support Microsoft anymore.

From here http://www.workrights.ca/index.htm appeared to have hi-jacked your url much as it distresses me to say. Is it hosted on the same server?

beggars can't be choosers, so tyee loyalists can't ask for a refund for non-service. I won't bash the Gates of money and his empire - at least he donates wads of it to developing countries to ensure a steady stream of highly qualified, loyal, and hard working future elves for the Microsoft empire lined by the silicon valley. I second the motion - thank god the fire is out from celcius 7/26 and tyee has tamed the wild world web.

Happy to see you back and relieved to know it was a technical problem as opposed to the political one I was suspecting...
I agree with the above contributors that Apache is a strong choice with agreeable direction and infinite possibility as the Tyee.ca grows into the future.
Tyee techies, go here:

for some coherent information that may yet one day convert you.

I am heartened to see all the comments out there in favor of Apache. It is definitely an option we are well aware off and seriously contemplating. Thanks again for all your comments

I too must confess I was leaning toward the conspiracy angle and, while I'll just have to wait for another opportunity to link the capitalists with the aliens, I am delighted to be reading and ranting in the Tyee once again.

There's still some weird things going on here. When I went to thetyee.ca, half the links went to Terminal City. There was a banner for it, too. Here's some of the error message that I received when I went to http://www.thetyee.ca/Last+Page/index.htm # Error Type: Microsoft VBScript runtime (0x800A01A8) Object required /nr/shared/terminalcity/includes/sectionindex.inc, line 33 # Browser Type: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7) Gecko/20040626 Firefox/0.9.1 # Page: GET /NR/exeres/00000235ybmjqcusytracxjv/sectionindex.asp # Time: Friday, July 30, 2004, 1:25:12 PM Hope that helps you techies out a bit. Glad to see the site up and running again. Although I don't agree with everything that's said here, you always make me think, posted comments included.

Yeah, great to have the site back up. The Tyee is pretty much my only source of local news.

Tyee is not coming back to my inbox again yet. Is there still a malfunction or is it something I said? (I'm not even a liberal)

Good to have The Tyee back online. My initial reaction to the site's absence was that the Liberal rat bastard's tried to pull a "Georgia Straight" on the site.

Yes, indeed, welcome back David and Company. Isn't it great to know how many people (and growing) are counting on your 'baby', The Tyee, to get the truth out. Are you sure you weren't just testing us all to see if we were paying attention? Seriously though, although I got a laugh out of some of the comments above, you are such a threat to the mainstream media who are so-o-o-o-o protective of the 'boys in the backrooms of power in B.C., that I would have believed any and all of the above conspiracy theories. From personal experience, the one thing this little network, that operate in the shadows, is truly afraid of, is THE TRUTH being shared with THE PEOPLE: that is real power - PEOPLE POWER - the power to create POSITIVE CHANGE. Keep up the good work and be vigilant!
