The Tyee scored first place in three categories -- Best Multi-Author site; Best site for News; and Best site for Politics -- last night at the first annual Best of 604 Online awards presentation in downtown Vancouver.

The sold-out event drew bloggers and other online creatives out of their virtual realms and into the crowded, festive atmosphere of The Cellar bar on Granville Street. To be in the buzzing room was to feel the arrival, and impact, of social media and online culture in this corner of Canada. As event organizer Rebecca Bollwitt wrote on her Miss 604 blog this morning: "Some may think it's a silly idea to have an awards night for bloggers and websites, but I think that (especially in this town) so much effort, passion, care, humour, and personality goes into creating such great content that everyone deserved a night out regardless."

Bollwitt, whose own blog has a large and loyal following, certainly deserves huge credit for organizing so successful an event, the proceeds from which went to the food bank.

Some 7,000 people cast votes via the web for Vancouver region nominees in 14 categories.

For Best Multi-Author site, the Tyee edged out Beyond Robson (second) and Vancouver is Awesome (third).

The Tyee was voted Best site for News just ahead of CBC and News 1130.

In the Best site for Politics category, runners up to The Tyee were Matthew Good and Jonathon Narvey.
