New Funding Model for Tyee

Bold tactic could redefine independent media.

As The Tyee looks ahead to another exciting season of top-notch political and cultural observation, we would like to update our faithful readership on some exciting new ideas. Changes are coming that will help us provide the kind of intelligent alternative that you crave.

As many of you know, finding stable funding for an independent online magazine like The Tyee poses a challenge. We believe we have found an exciting new solution to this perennial problem -- a strategy we call "Enhanced News." Here's how it might work:

Let's say we run a report on the current scandal involving former solicitor general John Les and possible dubious land deals in Chilliwack. Our story might read:

"The B.C. Criminal Justice Branch confirmed that it is examining whether former officials at Chilliwack City Hall, 'improperly benefited from any commercial transactions involving land developers.' But there is nothing improper about the deals you can find at O'Connor Chrysler Jeep Eagle on Yale Road in Chilliwack, home of honest bargains on great new and used vehicles."

Another example:

"Mayor Sam Sullivan's 'ecodensity' concept has drawn intense criticism from some community activists. While no one disputes that density is positive when it involves the densely packed, mouth-watering chocolate chips in every muffin at Schwartz Brothers' Bakery, community planners are not convinced that Sullivan's plan is a good one."

In this way, The Tyee will continue to bring you breaking news on important stories while developing a solid base of funding with local product placement associates. We believe that such inserts will be helpful not only to The Tyee, but also to our readership. After all, staying well informed has many components. Politics and culture are important, but so are the money-saving bargains you will find every day at Wonderbucks on Commercial Drive in Vancouver.

That's right, friends -- our Enhanced News concept is already at work. We look forward to a bold future in which The Tyee will continue to inform and entertain while Tyee staffers will be able to go out to a few decent restaurants for a change. That's good news for everybody. As Tyee staffers feel more comfortable about rent payments and rising fuel prices, they will be free to concentrate on making The Tyee as good as it can be. With your continued support, we will keep you up to date on the issues that matter, whether it's provincial politics, environmental policy, or the new two-for-one family package at Best Western Hotels. Your comfort is our business. [Tyee]

The trouble with outsourcing knowledge work...

... is that the result may not always come across as, well, authentic.

(The preceding message was brought to you by Tourism San Seriffe. On our island, even the Grotesque is beautiful.)

    Tyee alternative?

Is this some kind of joke?

Of course the real joke is that the Tyee is an "alternative" source of media in the first place. Not only is it heavily censored but its columns appear in Canwest-Global owned local newspapers. It is controlled can be sure it is controlled by same thought-police cabal that seem to control all of the media in Canada.

BTW David, I didn't catch your appearance at the last Jewish Book Festival which as someone who is descended from the Portuguese Sephardim, I was sorry to have missed so please accept this comment after the fact:

    self-aggrandizement about the Tyee

    Quote:

As The Tyee looks ahead to another exciting season of top-notch political and cultural observation,

Talk about editorial ego-bloat. Other independent media don't need to convert themselves into advertorials to stay afloat. And what's top-notch here is more often the commentators in the forum than the articles themselves, which are often vacuous and "trendy"/trite in tone; increasingly so of late.

If this article and the self-aggrandizing lead bits were meant as satire, it didn't work. If it's meant in seriousness, David, you need to take a pill.

    Good Idea

For example if the Tyee is running a story on the legalization of prostitution, and one of the staffers samples the product you could slip in a line such as [b]" At Loose Lucy's Place its only a EDITED FOR PROFANITY -- TYEE MODERATOR

who do I see in the Tyee for advertising to sell my many BRICK & Bre-X shares? Which stories will they fit in?

Ah BC Railgate, brought to you by Bre-X, sounds fitting.

    So funny

The real funny thing is all the people who take April 1st news stories that are so obviously fake seriously.

Re New Funding Model for Tyee

Your organisation is so progressive. Really glad to know that such care and thought to improving profits for your stakeholders is clearly front and centre for your commendable, modern, forward-thinking news group. I depend on as much imbedded advertising as possible to compel me to purchase at ever-increasing speeds. Thanks for keeping us all up to date.
(Hehe, April Fools. Thanks David and Co for a good chuckle).

oh no! does this mean that the bc fed and the bctf have pulled the plug on this 'progressive' media outlet?

    Lately

I have noticed that there have only been two pieces a day coming from the Tyee of late. It appears to me that simonfraser has hit the nail right on the head. Perhaps the end is near for the Tyee and we are all the worse for it.

That said, instead of railing at the mainstream media, perhaps the Tyee could be a little more up front with who bankrolls it.

Monsanto famous for their GE seeds would be a good customer for this type of GE news.

The problem with this April Fool joke is, it's entirely believable of course. Which made it a really good one though. :-) Just a little too likely though, for comfort.

    I applaud this!

This is a great idea. I certainly hope that it brings in lots of money for the Tyee. Remember that the more ads you embed, the more money you make. I assume that your goal is to be a better money maker than anything at CanWest. That's certainly more of a challenge than being a better news source!

How I needed this! I put all my heart and soul into a really good joke, and I managed to overdo, so people took it serioulsy and all the screaming clues were overlooked, due to people's grim frame of mind. It was a total washout. Pearls before... well, this puts me into a good mood again. Thanks so much for bothering!

When Vaughn Palmer writes an article he should say at the top where the money for his salary comes from? Somehow I don't think the Sun will start doing that.
