Did BC Ferries forget to renew its domain name?

B.C. Ferries ran into big trouble with its online reservations this afternoon, apparently because someone forget to renew its domain name.

CBC News reported considerable confusion today among persons trying to access the site. Late this afternoon, at a site called TechVibes.com, the answer appeared:

Looks like a head might be about to roll over at BC Ferries. It appears someone forgot to renew the BCFerries.com domain name.

Check the comments to the TechVibes post to see what the likely answer is.

    Now, please, remind me

WHO WAS IT THAT COULDN'T MANAGE A POP STAND?

This government and its agencies and spinoffs are so incompetent they couldn't manage a pay toilet.

And it's still not working right

And David Hahn gets over a million bucks a year. Best place on earth to reward incompetence, apparently.

As of noon 09/01 It's still unavailable....

...from certain networks. After discovering this yesterday from the LAN where I work, I tipped CBC radio and showed a reporter the site's inaccessibility via WiFi in a downtown coffee shop

He said it was available from within their building, and I also found it available via my ISP, Uniserve, when I got home. However last night and this morning it's still unavailable on my company's LAN.

They haven't failed to re-register the name, but somebody's deleted the record of their ownership of it from a major DNS server, and that error is propagating out to other DNS servers, possibly via one of the major 'root' servers.

This is a massive screw-up on somebody's part, bringing down a major e-commerce site before a high-demand period. Nice of Hahn et al. to communicate with the public about it.

If anyone *needs* their services, ask around, or hit your local library, university or Web cafe. Uniserve uses Telus as a wholesaler, so I suspect that Telus users may be able to get to the site....

    Off the Throne

    About The Hook

The British Columbia legislature resumes sitting this week, but not before Premier Christy Clark outlined her spring agenda in an appearance on the Vancouver radio station where she used to work in what was pitched as a replacement for the throne speech. That agenda amounted to staying the course: focus on the economy, no money for teachers or anything else, and no higher taxes.

This from a premier who won the leadership of her party on a "change" platform. Perhaps appropriate then that the government didn't bother with a more formal speech from the throne at a time when polls suggest an increasing number of people are wondering if the premier's going to, as they say, piss or get off the pot.
