The Hook: Political news, freshly caught

Canwest Global may sell papers; CBC, National Post sharing content

Canwest Global made big news on Friday morning, but it didn't run in Canwest's own National Post.

The Globe and Mail's business section reported that Paul Godfrey, CEO of the National Post, had found financing for a buyout of Canwest daily papers, including both major Vancouver papers.

The story said Godfrey had no comment about the buyout.

As of mid-morning, the business section of the National Post had nothing on the report, nor did the front page, and CBC News quoted Canwest spokesman John Douglas as saying the papers are not for sale. Nor did Canwest Global's website have anything about the report.

Meanwhile, the CBC and the National Post are about to share content, starting immediately. Paul Mcgrath, writing on the Inside the CCB blog, wrote:

This is a strange one. The CBC and the National Post are going to start sharing content.

The frienenemy arrangement was announced in a press release this afternoon, and is effective immediately. It allows the post to republish sports stories in the online national post and sometimes in the newspaper. The CBC will run daily financial stories and podcasts from the Financial Post in cbc.ca’s Money section.

On the Macleans.ca website, Andrew Coyne called it "Apocalypse now":

No, this is not April Fool’s. I don’t quite know what to make of this, it’s so bizarre. I don’t mean it’s a bad idea. It’s just … bizarre. And I have a feeling this is just the beginning.

There are two ways of looking at this. One, the National Post, a private newspaper, is now partially funded by the taxpayer.

Two, the CBC has just been partially privatized.

On the TSX late Friday morning, Canwest shares were up 8 cents to 28 cents.
