The Hook: Political news, freshly caught

CBC starts begging for its life

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, facing the loss of 800 jobs to help meet a budget shortfall, is going online in search of public support.

A post on inside the cbc.com offers a link to an online petition that early this evening had 58,449 signatures. The text of the petition:

The CBC and Radio Canada are a national treasure, and play a vital role in our culture. We urgently call on you to grant the CBC's request for a bridge loan to cover its budget shortfall this year, and commit your government to supporting our public broadcasters.

The post also offers a link to a new Facebook group that claims to have signed up over 1,000 members in 48 hours.
