The Hook: Political news, freshly caught

Republicans should learn from Harper's victory: US editorial

An influential U.S. business website is telling Republicans to "take a leadership lesson" from Prime Minister Stephen Harper's "crushing victory" on Monday.

"Canada's conservatives [rolled] to victory on a platform of lowered sales and corporate taxes, avoiding climate-change legislation, promoting Arctic sovereignly and upping military spending," reads an editorial from Investors.com. "Is the GOP listening?"

The editorial, headlined "Canada Throws Its Own Tea Party", celebrated Harper's ability to compromise with political opponents, honed during 5 years as minority leader.

"Yet he and his Tories never compromised their principles and made this election a referendum on them. Hopefully the GOP heed this lesson now and for 2012," argues Investors.com.

Harper trounced his long-time Liberal Party rivals on election day. His party now controls 167 seats out of 308, while the Grits dropped to 34.

Jack Layton's NDP, meanwhile, made major political gains, sending 102 MPs to Ottawa and becoming Parliament's official opposition.

Harper's resounding victory on Monday can be explained in part by his "Drill, baby, drill" philosophy, Investors.com argues.

"Harper, who comes from the conservative and energy-rich western province of Alberta, campaigned on making Canada an 'energy superpower,'" reads the editorial. "He wasn't talking about wind turbines and solar panels, but about Alberta's oil-rich tar sands."

Investors.com claims 31 million page views and 1.22 million unique visitors each month. Its online competitors include the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg.
