The Hook: Political news, freshly caught

Will Elections Canada shut down Twitter on May 2?

A battle may be looming between Elections Canada and the Twitterverse over "premature transmission" of election results on the night of May 2.

Under Section 329 of the Elections Act, "No person shall transmit the result or purported result of the vote in an electoral district to the public in another electoral district before the close of all of the polling stations in that other electoral district."

On Twitter sites like elxn41, celebrity tweeters like Jian Ghomeshi are expressing amazement.

US journalism professor/blogger Jay Rosen is asking whether a Canadian "mass tweet-in" will break out to protest Section 329. #Votemob, which is urging young Canadians to get out and vote, is passing the idea along.

As of midmorning Thursday, Elections Canada had not issued a statement about the issue.
