Wet weather gave firefighters a slight reprieve over the weekend, but the province's wildfire outlook still looks dire.
Fire Information Officer Gwen Eamer told 24 hours that there were still 347 wildfires raging across B.C. Sunday despite cool weather and rain in many areas.
And while Mother Nature made it easier for crews to aggressively battle the blazes, summer is far from over.
"We're expecting another ridge [of hot weather] in the coming days and we'll have hot and dry condition before next weekend," Eamer said. "The weather was a light reprieve but it doesn't change the long-term outcome."
Most areas in the Interior only received two to five millimeters of rain, not enough to made a big dent.
"But it did allow for us to work really aggressively this weekend because it's a bit safer for our firefighters," Eamer said. "It's less volatile."
The B.C. Forest Service is also reminding the public that a touch of rain isn't an invitation to get careless.
"The conditions are still there for burning," said Eamer. "[On Saturday], we had 13 new fires and half of those were caused by people."
Matt Kieltyka reports for 24 Hours.
