HST vote deadline extended

British Columbians will have longer to receive and return their Harmonized Sales Tax ballots under extensions Elections BC announced today.

"I am issuing an Order to extend the timelines of the HST Referendum to compensate for the effects of the Canada Post labour dispute," acting Chief Electoral Officer Craig James said in a prepared statement.

The deadline to request a voting package has been extended until midnight on July 22, 2011, and voting will be open until 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 5, 2011. Ballots are to be returned to Elections BC, a Service BC Centre or an Elections BC Collection Centre.

Under the previous timeline, ballots were to have been returned by July 22.

Today's statement says that residents in 14 constituencies should have already received their ballots and people in the other 71 should receive their ballots by July 7.
