Adrian Dix wins BC NDP leadership

Vancouver-Kingsway MLA Adrian Dix has won the leadership of the B.C. New Democratic Party.

"It's time to get down to work and defeat the BC Liberals," Dix said in his acceptance speech. He thanked his competitors and attacked Premier Christy Clark's record, pointing out she closed 120 schools as education minister.

Dix received 9,772 votes to Mike Farnworth's 9,095.

It took three rounds of voting for Dix, who led after the first ballot, to win over Port Coquitlam MLA Mike Farnworth, Juan de Fuca MLA John Horgan and pro-marijuana activist Dana Larsen.

"We are not going to win the next election by sidling up to the Liberal Party and just showing up," Dix said earlier in his speech to the convention. He argued, as he had on the campaign trail, that a clear, strong platform will motivate likely NDP supporters to vote.

    Really?

That's your idea of a scandal?! Wasn't there something about Christy and a cat?! Honestly, everyone's campaign, regardless of political stripe has had these sorts of issues. Doesn't quite compare to closing over a hundred schools or disregarding labour laws to the point of stripping contracts...

    Or BC Rail....

    BTW I was just checking the vote results for the last election for the Point Grey riding;
Campbell only won by 2200 votes out of close to 20,000.

Can hardly wait for David Eby to beat Clark.

    Other than Gloria from the

Other than Gloria from the CBC repeatedly calling the New Democratic Paper the NDP Party, the voting went well. and for those complaining about member sign ups, let's not forget that the party executive went through them all and approved them. The misdeeds of the Liberals will come back to haunt them

    Congrats To Mr Dix

It was a fairly decent convention and although Mr Dix was not my 1st choice I am happy that he won. He can unify the NDP, which in my view can clearly beat the BC Liberals. I know that some posters here will disagree but I can hardly wait for Mr Dix and Ms Clark to have a debate, this is what politics is all about is it not. I've repeatedly posted that BC needs a new direction and this NDP is worth my vote. Although polls already put Mr Dix behind Ms Clark that poll clearly only looks at the leaders and not the platforms or track records of either government. As for those folks who constantly remind us of the 90"s is it not time that you all just got over it? It seems that those who keep referring to the 90's keep avoiding their own 10 years in power, something to think about hmmm?

    Ha ha

If Cool Hand and Christy Fan are on here pretending to celebrate then Dix must have been the right choice.

Trying to outmiddle the middle was bound to fail without the business bucks and media on side, just as it had for the entire 21st century thus far.

Dix will bring in the crucial members (AKA campaign workers) and therefore he will bring in the dollars. If the election was tomorrow, Farnworth would have been better, but it isn't - it will be fall at the earliest. In the meantime, Dix, the best organizer of the bunch by far, will do exactly what the NDP needed to do years ago: ORGANIZE!

The NDP needs grassroots operatives spreading ideas locally outside of the MSM. People driven by strong ideals will man the phones and hit the streets far more effectively than people with a mushy grasp of issues who want a safe choice and otherwise wouldn't have been involved. Whatever happens, under Dix, Christy Clark and the BC Liberals will suffer. It will be a very active, motivated campaign.

    Dix can do it

Horgan was my first choice, and that's who I voted for. But Dix is a much more formidable opponent than the last leader was, and the Liberals could only narrowly beat her.

It's going to be interesting. As Horgan said, "Game on!"

    Dix

Dix will do a great job, he's certainly got the personality and the drive.

Ms Clark is no doubt already planning a rope-a-dope strategy in the debates. Just try and run out the clock.

But before she takes on Dix she has to beat Eby.

    In the end

In the end there could be only one winner, but I think the BC NDP has shown that they have more talent in their stable than the MSM gives them credit for.

If I was Christy Clark and her band of miscreants, I would be starting to worry. I think that the opposition will be much more relentless than what we saw under Carole James.

And if the BC Conservative Party gets its act together under John Cummins, the next election could be very interesting.

Keep going left and negative, destructive & pessimistic...

and it won't be pundit Alise Mills.

It'll be the Honourable Alise Mills, MLA and Minister for Intergovernmental Relations and Deputy Premier by December.

Go ahead, you've made my... week!!!!!! Some great commentary here too. Hope you appreciate, if not welcome, my honesty.

    Nope Christy Fan

Don't appreciate it at all - because it's not honest and, truth to tell, it's not commentary either.

    Democratic Trust

    About The Hook

As British Columbia and other jurisdictions consider allowing online voting, can it be made secure enough that people will trust it? Will it encourage more people to vote? But if something goes wrong, will it further erode people's confidence in their democracies? And what role is the media likely to play in shaping the debate?

These are among the issues to be considered at a May 26 discussion that Fair Voting BC and PartyX are hosting at The Hive in Vancouver. I'll be on the panel, along with UBC Law's Fathima Cader and SFU computer scientist Steve Wolfman. The results and recommendations are to inform the two organizations' public positions on online voting.

Meanwhile join me and other contributors on The Hook as we bring you the latest from B.C. and across Canada.
