The Fight HST group will begin recall campaigns against Liberal MLAs starting in January, organizers told reporters today.
Former Premier Bill Vander Zalm and senior organizer Chris Delaney said in a press conference (posted on the CBC website) that they will start with three recall campaigns, followed by one a month in a “cascade of recalls” until the Liberal government is defeated or repeals the harmonized sales tax.
The organizers identified 18 Liberal MLAs to target, and will begin with the three constituencies where the most canvassers sign up by November to collect recall signatures.
Once a recall period begins in a constituency, volunteers will have 60 days to collect the signatures of 40 percent of eligible voters.
There are now 43 Liberal, 35 NDP and two independent MLAs in the legislature.
Delaney listed the following targets:
Donna Barnett, Cariboo-Chilcotin
Ida Chong, Oak Bay-Gordon Head
Terry Lake, Kamloops-North Thompson
John Slater, Boundary-Similkameen
Marc Dalton, Maple Ridge-Mission
Colin Hansen, Vancouver-Quilchena
Bill Bennett, Kootenay East
John Les, Chilliwack
Bill Barisoff, Penticton
Steve Thomson, Kelowna-Mission
John Rustad, Nechako Lakes
Ron Cantelon, Parksville-Qualicum
Eric Foster, Vernon-Monashee
Don McRae, Comox Valley,
Norm Letnick, Kelowna-Lake Country
Jane Thornthwaite, North Vancouver-Seymour
Joan McIntyre, West Vancouver-Sea to Sky
Ben Stewart, Westside Kelowna

"Survivor" - The New Zalm Series
And when the campaigns begin, perhaps the Libs should take a page out of the NDP's game plan for the 1998 recalls in Prince George North and Skeena. Slimy Moe Sihota is president of the NDP by no accident.
1. The then NDP president deceived Elections BC by telling them that he sent people to Prince George "on a membership drive", when in fact they were working covertly in the anti-recall campaign;
2. The NDP had two supporters launch 'alternative' recall campaigns at the same time in PGN and Skeena in order to fool people into signing their petition to dilute the signature pool.
3. And then Bill Teileman, on behalf of the BCFed, went up to PGN to work on the anti-recall campaign.

"Survivor", "Recall", and the "Zalm" all as part of a trilogy. Get out the popcorn folks, this is gonna be fun.

Sorry but I must be the dumbest guy on the planet; what exactly does recalling Liberal MLA’s of this present government have to do with any previous government?
What does this recall campaign by Vanderzalm and Delaney have to do with the Opposition or the NDP? I do not believe they are connected in any way.
Oh and BTW I have never voted Liberal, NDP, Social Credit or Conservative. So there is no requirement to label this poster one side or the other.

Absolutely nothing.
But that's Luke's standard MO...he lives in the past, in a world dominated by polls and pollsters.
However, it might be interesting to note that there's a fair amount of information available from elections BC about another interesting blast from the past on the subject of 'recall'.
The only recall petition which was ever successful in obtaining enough certified signatures to force a recall election was organized to respond to the actions of a Parksville BCLIBERAL MLA. A fellow named Paul Reitsma.
Perhaps we could ask Luke to tell us why it was a man elected as one of Gordon Campbell's chosen who actually became the only casualty (until Campbell himself fell to the initiative legislation this summer) or the Recall and Initiative Act?
I think it would make a much more interesting discussion, don't you?
The only ‘successful’ targets of the legislation have been BC Liberals!

BC's best pollster says.....
From Angus Reid :
NDP – 48%
BC Liberal – 25%
Greens – 13%
Conservatives – 8%
Others – 6%
70% would vote to scrap the HST
18% would vote to keep it

Can Even Shoot Straight Out of the Gate
The example that I provided was the recall of NDP MLA's in the 1990's NDP government and the hijinx orchestrated behind the scenes by the NDP party machinery.
Anyhoo, with the balloon now deflated with the HST referendum next fall, I can't see much momentum behind recall anymore.
And recall is supposed to be perceived by the public as a 'grass-roots' effort, not a self-serving political effort.
That's why I can't believe that the 3 top seats set for recall have their riding recall organizers as follows:
1. Donna Barnett / Cariboo Chilcotin - Charlie Wyse (former NDP MLA looking to get his seat back in by-election);
2. Terry Lake / Kamloops North Thompson - Chad Moats (Kamloops NDP member/organizer looking to elect an NDP MLA in by-election);
3. John Slater / Boundary Similkameen – Joe Cardoso (Con candidate with a respectable 20% of vote in '09 looking to win seat in by-election).
Talking about political naivette.
Dumb, dumb, dumb!

Luke the Insincere
But you had no problem with all the business leaders backing Campbell whether it be by donations to his party, op-ed pieces in the media or using the courts to defend their man.
Methinks you have a standard for everyone else that your own party doesn't have to live up to.

Poor old Luke.....
Can you sense the fear in Cool Hand Luke`s post?
I can, the PAB are all over BCs media comment threads today....
If "recall in the Fall" is doomed to fail Luke why are you whining?
I think the Zalm strategy is brilliant!...Have communities fighting for the honour of removing their BC Liberal MLA....
"Who hates their MLA the mostest"
Typo error above with mostest was intentional!
Hey Luke...Did you listen to the Rabblers on Sean Holman`s sunday CFAX radio program?
All of them, every single rabbler including the 3 ex BC Liberals confirmed that the BC Liberals and Gordon Campbell are finished!
That was a first for Holman`s radio broadcast!

On problem with Cool Hand alias Luke's assertion.
All those allegations were investigated and guess what? They were found wrong. Ah but does that matter to Cool Hand Luke?

There is nothing more grass roots
There is nothing more grass roots than citizens working together to counteract the corrosive effect of incompetent and corrupt government.
The fact the legislation (which was designed NEVER to work) has been used by an effective and well organized citizenry to begin the necessary process of wrestling the reins of power from the corporate kleptomaniac who has held them for the last decade is the most 'democratic' thing to happen in this province since the last time the legislation was used effectively - to rid the legislature of a BC Liberal MLA called Paul Reitsma.
I’d sure like to read what Rod Smelser thinks of this – unfortunately, he’s not around the Tyee any longer…

You are right. I think the strategy is great. They deserve to squirm. The degree of squirming suggests that they have completely underestimated just how angry their arrogance has made their constituents.
Recall was not suppose to be easy. It was suppose to be used in very extreme circumstances and way to go Gordon, you created them!

Ah yes, thanks Mr. West for the heads up. After reading the story and then viewing the first posting I had to wonder if the posting was on the wrong topic; it bears no relation to the story above.....either that or I wasn’t sure if I should rip my eyeballs out and start over.
I see what the problem is now; our friend Cool Hand has a medical problem; his heart is two sizes too small.....
Thanks so much Mr. Cool Hand for the synoptic review of some long dead government from the 90’s...how long back was that anyways????.....a little political advice for the future....two weeks is a long time....what happened two weeks ago in politics in BC???? One two three...ok times up........ it was the HST & Recall Petition wining the day in court..... anything happen before that????Who cares ......;)
Now we talk of squirming??? Yes they are squirming from what you state Mr. Skywalker but also from something else that is beyond their control.
Some of the squirming will be because of the fact that all of their political careers, on the climb to where they are now, most of the top Liberals like Campbell, have been virtually unchecked in their behavior and desires to rise to control.
And now??
They have lost control of their own destiny; a destiny that will be decided for them by good ole folks like Peter Brown et al... these are the people that will educate Campbell and his ilk that they have suddenly become dispensable ; lost forever in the political wasteland we call BC politics.....
Recall has been legitimized by the very system that designed it to fail....you gotta love these types of historic political revelations however small.....it is a big victory for the citizens of BC.
What are Campbell and his boys also worried about?? The fact that once the ordinary citizens get a taste of direct democracy they just might learn to love it...and that does not bode well for the capitalist agenda....does it Mr. Cool Hand???
Cheerio...

Full Steam Recall
Seeing the inside of BC Rail fiasco and having HST hoisted onto a province without being processed through the so called democracy of a discussion/vote in the legislature...isn't that enough to question a promise of a premier's word to abide by a Sept.2011 general referendum? Let alone the breaking of a pre-election promise of "No HST on the radar".
We as an electorate are no longer deaf, dumb and trusting of what Mr. Campbell makes up on "the fly".
Who could trust his word when he breaks it ALL the time? Who could trust his word when he doesn't even abide by the present law/legislation around this issue or adjust the legislation in the Legislative Assembly in Victoria; WITHIN the democracy of a debate and vote of all MLA's.? Who can trust a leader who makes it up as he goes along? Is he legally allowed to do this?
No wonder some business leaders are questioning the stability of the present and future economy.
Mr. Campbell...will your provincial credit rating from New York also begin to tumble over the next 6 months?
Building a solid provincial economy for the future of ours and the next generation (when you are enjoying your gov't pension) takes hard work, credibility, continued support( with our hard earned tax dollars, yes OUR $'s ) for student education and support for building needed services for a population which builds a vibrant community.
There's no "trickle down effect" happening from big transnational corporations that you have excused from taxes while the HST is crippling the population with the myriad of items you asked Harper's gov't to include on what necessities we buy.
P.S. I didn't know that toilet paper and school children's clothing and school supplies are "luxury items"
Eliminate the HST now.
