Campbell says he'll seek fourth term

Premier Gordon Campbell said he has every intention of running for a fourth term in the next provincial election.

Campbell told Globe and Mail reporter Ian Bailey "yes, I'm intending to run. And I promised everyone I will announce I'll be 65 when I’m doing it."

The premier was elected to a third term a year ago this week. Since then, Campbell's Liberals have come under fire for introducing the HST, with opposition fueled by former Socred premier Bill Vander Zalm (who should be a natural Campbell ally, says political science professor Dennis Pilon).

Earlier this year, Campbell told Global TV's Keith Baldrey that his 'Golden Decade' officially ends in 2015, and he would stick around to see it to completion. Campbell announced his 'Five Goals for a Golden Decade' in his 2005 speech from the throne.

Colleen Kimmett reports for The Tyee.

Yeah, good luck with that Gordo...

You still gotta get thru this term and I'll be working my butt off to make sure you don't.

Just another lie from the man!

Soon he will 'want to spend more time with his family'!

    At least now...

We know the point of term four of the BCLibs. It's closing the Golden Decade and IF - THAT'S A BIG I-F - my team wins... it'll mean the total destruction of the BCNDP.

    Campbell Running

What else could he say? If he said he wasn't running, he would be a lame duck and the knives would be out.

However, I don't think he will run again. The mayor of Surrey has a good shot at his job.

The scary thing is he will

The scary thing is he will probably win again thanks to the Okanagan and the elite in Vancouver, West Van and the bible belts of the Fraser valley (Eastern Surrey to Chilliwack) and Peace region (2 ridings). Plus 2 ridings each in Kamloops and Prince George ridings go for him as well. Not to mention how weak the NDP is. Ms. James should never of pissed the unions off either. She needs to go if the NDP have any hope. But she won't.

    What Golden Decade?

Enough of this liberal silliness. The only gold went into the pockets of business interests.

    This is a good thing

I really hope Campbell does run again. Even if James is leader of the NDP I think this time around people will not forgot the lies and corruption and the Liberals will wither away into oblivion.

And a great side benefit? No more Mary Polak.

    Flip Flop And Tic Toc

Well first he mentioned to CTV's Jim Beatty that he might not run but he never confirmed that he would quit. I think that he did this to push the spotlight off himself so to speak. The next day he then appears again and said that he is going to run in the election, does this sound exactly like the announcements surronding not only the BC Budget and the HST?, Flip Flop, TIC TOC is the only thing I get from these guys. Flip Flop because of the obvious and TIC TOC because the clock is ticking to remove these people from office.

    Cheers

    Coup

If Campbell actually ran again the polls would be so bad his own party would dump him before the election.

Although I know the answer won't be worth the time it takes to ask the question, I have to ask anyway, why would the NDP destruct if they lost a 4th election?

    Campbell not running

Campbell will not be running in the next election. 1st, he is a liar so if he says he will then most likely he won't. Also he is looking for a legacy. He has sold off or given a lot of the resources in the province so he needs a monument. Site C steps up and he will have something like WAC Bennett that people can remember him by. Can you imagine the graffiti on the face of the dam?

Will be interesting to see who dumps who first

"If Campbell actually ran again the polls would be so bad his own party would dump him before the election."

Actually the BC Liberals have a mechanism of a leader review at the first and third convention following an election. The first of those is this year. It doesn't happen at the convention itself, but a vote happens within the riding association.

So if the BC Liberals are smart, they would
vote out endorsing him. Lost confidence if you will.

The NDP has the same mechanism in place to
review the leadership, but works differently.

The BC Liberals desperately need new leadership as does the NDP.

It will be interesting to see which party
    replaces their leader first.

If the both do, there's hope for BC.

If not, thecircus and clown show continues.

Both in Victoria and here at the Tyee, and other political blogs.

    One big difference between

One big difference between the Liberal and NDP leaders; 1) Right now Gordo is the glue that holds the Liberals together. 2)Ms. James isn't the glue that holds the NDP together. When Gordo is gone (sometime this summer?) and whoever the new Liberal leader is, is established, then Ms. James can 'have her walk in the snowstorm' and the NDP could be rejuvenated

True but needs to be fixed.

"One big difference between the Liberal and NDP leaders; 1) Right now Gordo is the glue that holds the Liberals together."

The strength of the Liberals is weakening and there are many that are waiting to brush on the solvent to remove that glue,
resand and rebuild into something that might remotely be accepted by the voters,
but there will need to be alot of marketing on a product with a defective
    history.

"2)Ms. James isn't the glue that holds the NDP together. When Gordo is gone (sometime this summer?) and whoever the new Liberal leader is, is established, then Ms. James can 'have her walk in the snowstorm' and the NDP could be rejuvenated"

Actually a walk in the forest. James can't see the forest through the trees and she
needs to pack up her tent and leave the forest. If she doesn't there are a few
in the NDP that would gladly haul her out
    to the pond.

    Woo-hoo!!!

Because NO Liberals have the guts to stand up to him, and his arrogance is going to drag the entire band of neo-libs down with him.

    Don't underestimate Campbell

May I remind you that Social Credit's W.A.C. Bennett won 7 elections in a row. It can happen again. Maybe not 7, but 4 is certainly possible, especially given the lackluster performance of the Opposition...

    This is GOOD news

He must lose this time. We couldn't possibly vote him in again, could we? One could say that it would be better if we had a dog running the province, but we already do.

    Democratic Trust

    About The Hook

As British Columbia and other jurisdictions consider allowing online voting, can it be made secure enough that people will trust it? Will it encourage more people to vote? But if something goes wrong, will it further erode people's confidence in their democracies? And what role is the media likely to play in shaping the debate?

These are among the issues to be considered at a May 26 discussion that Fair Voting BC and PartyX are hosting at The Hive in Vancouver. I'll be on the panel, along with UBC Law's Fathima Cader and SFU computer scientist Steve Wolfman. The results and recommendations are to inform the two organizations' public positions on online voting.

Meanwhile join me and other contributors on The Hook as we bring you the latest from B.C. and across Canada.
