Rix friend of British Columbia, Liberal Party

Premier Gordon Campbell’s statement on the death of Donald Rix said the 78-year-old doctor and businessman was a “great friend to our province.”

Rix was also a great friend of the British Columbia Liberal Party, giving at least $133,885 since 2005 either personally or through his companies, MDS Metro Laboratory Services Ltd., Rix Clinical Laboratories Ltd., Rix Industrial Laboratories Ltd. and Southlands Equities Ltd..

Rix’s main business was providing the laboratory work for medical tests.

Obituaries noted gifts including $9.5 million to the University of British Columbia and $400,000 to Junior Achievement of B.C.

Premier Campbell called Rix “a truly great British Columbian . . . whose generosity has left a lasting legacy for our province.”

    Anybody who donates

great amounts of money to the BC Lieberal Party is NOT a great British Columbian. They are actually a huge traitor!

Rix no traitor - Bill Tieleman

Donald Rix was a true philanthropist who gave much of his wealth away.

Comments that he was a "traitor" simply because he supported a right-wing political party are unfair and unseemly.

I met Rix and while I never agreed with his politics, he was clearly someone who believed in BC and did much good for our province.

    Democratic Trust

    About The Hook

As British Columbia and other jurisdictions consider allowing online voting, can it be made secure enough that people will trust it? Will it encourage more people to vote? But if something goes wrong, will it further erode people's confidence in their democracies? And what role is the media likely to play in shaping the debate?

These are among the issues to be considered at a May 26 discussion that Fair Voting BC and PartyX are hosting at The Hive in Vancouver. I'll be on the panel, along with UBC Law's Fathima Cader and SFU computer scientist Steve Wolfman. The results and recommendations are to inform the two organizations' public positions on online voting.

Meanwhile join me and other contributors on The Hook as we bring you the latest from B.C. and across Canada.
