Campbell evacuated after 'woman with a gun' seen nearby: Cernetig

Premier Gordon Campbell was evacuated from a Vancouver hotel after a woman with a gun appeared nearby, according to an account published on The Vancouver Sun website.

Campbell was reportedly being interviewed by columnist Miro Cernetig when the brief incident occurred.

The woman was not targeting Campbell, according to Cernetig's report, and the B.C. Liberal Party leader was not hurt.

    Someday we might find out

Someday we might find out just how many cops are riding shotgun on King Gordo. Sure hope the tax payers arn't paying for the lot of them. Is BC turning into a little Washington or Detroit?

    Offensive, Editor

The above comment is highly offensive, editor. All major political leaders have security, not only the premier.

Such a comment borders very closely on a hate crime. Shame on the Tyee for not taking it down.

    Wilf get a grip please!

    Here is the relevant portion,

"The premier was not a target in the incident. It was unclear precisely what had occurred but it appears the suspect was connected to a jewelry heist in the downtown.

"A woman with a gun came running by," one of the Waterfront Hotel's doorman explained. "Then she jumped into a taxi and drove away."

That is what the fuss was about. Almost sounds like an over reaction to me

    LOL

    DPL's comment was offensive???

I wonder which part was offensive, I'll bet even money Wilf is objecting to the "King Gordo" thing.

    Surreal

Mr. Tough on Crime cannot even walk through the streets of his own city, the one he was once Mayor of, without getting caught up in a cops and robbers scene. Un-bloody-believable.

Talk about the freaking twilight zone.

If this guy actually gets re-elected then someone has to dig up the diebold connection.

    But sir wilfrid moronier,

the premier's ENTIRE RECORD borders on a hate crime, in my opinion. Let's see attacking children, the poor, the disabled, the sick, the dying,...oh, that's right sir wilf, it's different when a politician does it...for you can not only rob someone with a pen as well as a gun, you can kill them as well. But wilf's ok with this, as long as he gets his 5 bucks a week in tax cuts, and his 30 bucks a week in new taxes and user fees...

Repeat, Campbell was not a target ... terrible reporting by the SUN.

The cops did what they were

The cops did what they were paid to do, drag Gordo out of sight. Some earlier poster said my original comment bordered on hate crime. Why would he think that? As for all major politicians having guards around them, how would he believe that Gordo is a major political figure! Lots of really imporrtand political figures don't drag around a whole pile of security. My God I was one of the crews flying the queen, The Duke, Prince Charles and Princess Ann around assorted parts of Canada.( Prince Philip) had one guy with him as an Aide when he came by to see how we were doing. Very few security folks. I sort of figure , heck they must be at least as important as King Gordo. I understand that the public pays for his security. Will he be like an ex President and get security after he gets pushed out of the job he has now? Swelled headed or much hated fellow for sure

    Perhaps....

"Swelled headed or much hated fellow for sure"

But enough people will like him to elect him for a third term. The Faithful are dying and going to their graves. Fewer votes for the NDP, a party incapable of holding power.

    Democratic Trust

    About The Hook

As British Columbia and other jurisdictions consider allowing online voting, can it be made secure enough that people will trust it? Will it encourage more people to vote? But if something goes wrong, will it further erode people's confidence in their democracies? And what role is the media likely to play in shaping the debate?

These are among the issues to be considered at a May 26 discussion that Fair Voting BC and PartyX are hosting at The Hive in Vancouver. I'll be on the panel, along with UBC Law's Fathima Cader and SFU computer scientist Steve Wolfman. The results and recommendations are to inform the two organizations' public positions on online voting.

Meanwhile join me and other contributors on The Hook as we bring you the latest from B.C. and across Canada.
